“The Glory of Their Times”

Rare Sportsfilms, Inc. is the rights owner of this DVD

Based on the book by Lawrence Ritter, the B & W film “The Glory of Their Times” is the story of the early days of baseball (1900-1918) from the turn of the century up to the end of the Red Sox Babe Ruth era.    It was known as “the quiet time”, when pitchers pitched complete game shutouts, hitters smacked tobacco-blackened dead balls for triples, and led the league in home runs with season totals of 6 or 10 or 19.    Ty Cobb won the batting title 12 out of 13 straight years – and hit .371 in the one year he didn’t win it!    It was the time of the early baseball legends, such as Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Tris Speaker, Chief Bender, “Wahoo” Sam Crawford and managers John McGraw and Connie Mack.    On this DVD, you’ll see still pictures of them all, as well as hear the actual voices of Hans Lobert, Chief Meyers, Fred Snodgrass, Harry Hooper, Sam Jones, Smokey Joe Wood, Rube Marquard, Ed Roush, George Gibson and Ty Cobb’s roommate Sam Crawford as they describe those days and tell stories of these legendary baseball players and personalities of over a hundred years ago!    Below are just some of the topics discussed as told by the men who “were there”!

·         Chief Meyers – What McGraw was like as a person and to play for.   McGraw’s most hated nickname.   The World Series of 1905: all five games were shutouts, Chief Bender and Eddie Plank vs Mathewson and Iron Man McGinnity.   Mathewson’s control.   The social standing of the players in those days – “rowdies”.

·         Rube Marquard – How McGraw treated his players.

·         Hans Lobert – Being fined by McGraw for scoring from third on a sac fly and winning a 3-2 11-inning game vs Mordecai Brown and the Cubs   Also what McGraw did two days later when he helped win another game against Chicago.

·         Fred Snodgrass – Tells the story of the famous “Fred Merkle boner” during the 1908 N.L. pennant race, and his comments on Merkle being blamed for the Giant’s loss of the pennant.

·         Chief Meyers – More comments on the “Merkle Boner” and why he thinks Merkle was considered by McGraw to be the smartest baseball man on the Giants.

·         Sam Crawford – The World Series of 1909, Wagner vs Cobb and who won the personal “head-to-head” battle in the series.   Who Sam thought was the greatest player he ever saw and why.

·         George Gibson – Pirate catcher tells why Wagner was considered such a great base-stealer.

·         Smokey Joe Wood – Cobb’s philosophy on spiking infielders on steal attempts.

·         Hans Lobert – On what a wonderful human being Wagner was.   Also an example of how much he loved to play the game and help youngsters.

·         Rube Marquard – Tells story of how Wagner was once severely cut sliding and what happened on the field during and after the game regarding the injury.

·         Sad Sam Jones – Relates what Yankee shortstop Everett Scott told him about what it was like having Cobb come down the baseline toward him.

·         Sam Crawford – Comments on Walter Johnson when Johnson first came up.

·         Smokey Joe Wood – His 12-game winning streak, Walter Johnson’s 16-game streak and his famous 1912 head-to-head duel vs Johnson in Washington.   How Johnson could have won many more games than he did.

·         Hans Lobert – Describes his first at-bat against rookie Walter Johnson.

·         Fred Snodgrass – Describes his famous error in the 8th game of the 1912 World Series.

·         Smokey Joe Wood – Comments on Meyers’ miss on Speaker’s 9th inning foul popup.

·         Chief Meyers – How McGraw and the Giants reacted to Snodgrass’s error.   Meyers’ roommate Jim Thorpe.

·         Ed Roush – Tells about Jim Thorpe’s main weakness as a player.

·         Fred Snodgrass – The amazing story of manager McGraw’s “Good Luck Charm” pitcher Charlie “Victory” Faust.

·         Hans Lobert – You might be surprised to learn what pitcher Lobert thought had the best spitball!

·         Fred Snodgrass – Tells the story of McGraw hiring a detective to shadow pitcher Bugs Raymond and why.

·         Joe Wood and Harry Hooper talk about the physique of Red Sox rookie Babe Ruth.

·         Hans Lobert – Batting against Babe Ruth for the first time.
