RARE EARLY CANADIAN SILVER SPOON- QUEBEC CIRCA 1800

Mystery Quebec Silversmith Jean-Baptiste Beguay 1786-1815

Offered in this sale is a Rare Early Canadian Fiddle Pattern Teaspoon , marked for a Quebec City Silversmith circa 1800 . The spoon exhibits the classic English “FIDDLE PATTERN” shape that speaks to the English influence in Quebec at that time.

THE MYSTERY

According to John E. Langdon’s seminal book, “CANADIAN SILVERSMITHS 1700-1900 ”, the maker’s mark is attributable to Quebec Silversmith Jean-Baptiste Beguay , active in Quebec City from 1786-1815 .

Interestingly, a publication by the Detroit Institute of Arts detailing its collection of “QUEBEC and RELATED SILVER ” attributes the same maker’s mark to Jean-Baptiste BEQUETTE and provides details of his life in Detroit in the 1820s.  Could it be the same craftsman operating under a different name?  I have included photos of the two references and invite you to make up your own mind.

SIZE & CONDITION :  The spoon measures approximately 14 cm (5 1/2”) long and weighs 20.7 g (0.73 oz). It exhibits very minor tip wear commensurate with age, but remains in excellent condition (see photos).  It features a wonderful period engraved monogram that appears to be “ABS ”.  It was acquired with a collection of other early Quebec silver (by less mysterious makers) that bears the same monogram and so is definitely a Quebec piece.

MARKS: The spoon is clearly hallmarked on the reverse with a Makers Mark – “JBB ” in Script within a rectangular cartouche.

I have other pieces of Sterling and Canadian Pre-Confederation Period Silver that I am listing this week, (see group photos) that I will be happy to ship together to save you shipping costs.

SHIPPING: Worldwide will be $12.00 (Canada via Expedited Post/ US & Worldwide Small Package (Air) rate). I will be happy to combine items for reduced shipping on auctions won in the same timeframe.  Please let me know if you are interested in other items in my listings so that I may hold off and send a consolidated invoice.

Unfortunately, I am no longer able to ship to Italy, Russia or the Ukraine.

Please study the photos and description carefully and e-mail me with any questions you have prior to bidding. Items are not returnable unless they have been significantly misrepresented. Thanks for looking & happy bidding!
