Here we have a very rare 1942 Zenith model 5-D-627 table radio featuring a beautiful two tone walnut cabinet, bird’s eye maple inlays, attractive black dial, ‘Z’ knobs, loop antenna, and outstanding performance on the AM broadcast band.

Cabinet:  The two tone cabinet is simply gorgeous. Dark walnut graces the top and sides of the cabinet while the front is done in American walnut. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the set with stunning Bird’s Eye Maple inlays around the front. I have never seen this model with the Bird’s Eye Maple inlays, as it usually features a zebra stripe or burl photo finish inlay. So it is indeed a rare version and possible proto-type of this model. An unusual ‘L’ inside a diamond is also stamped on the bottom of the cabinet which may indicate a limited run. Nonetheless the cabinet is quite attractive with its step up top, rounded sides, and Art Deco cut grill. The jet black trim compliments the large black dial perfectly and finishes the cabinet off with style and class. This classic is sure to turn heads no matter which room in the home or office you choose to display it in.

Dial/Knobs:  Zenith’s famous black dial is a real beauty. It illuminates nice and bright with all numbers & letters representing station frequencies legible and show ing virtually no signs of wear. The large airplane style ‘Z’ pointer is adds a nice touch. The new dial cover is clear and free from any cracks or breaks. Both ‘Z’ knobs are in great shape and work as follows: on/off & volume and tuning.

Grill Cloth: The 1930’s style grill cloth is a fine reproduction featuring a gold/caramel  color with an Art Deco geometric design. This grill cloth can also be purchased separately on our other eBay auctions.

Electronics/Chassis: All tubes in the 5 tube chassis were tested with any weak tubes being replaced. All caps, filters, and resistors were checked and replaced as needed. All brittle or bare wiring was replaced or re-insulated. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed, and re-aligned for optimal performance. I'm able to pick up many stations, near and far, across the AM broadcast band with good tone and plenty of volume using just the loop antenna.

The Cabinet’s Finish & Restoration Process: Our Radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by removing all the old and worn lacquers and stains. We then sand the cabinet with fine grit pads down to the original bare wood. Nicks, chips, and blemishes are filled and/or blended. Any loose veneer is re-secured. We make sure any filler applied or repairs made are blended nicely and do not detract from the beauty of the set unless otherwise noted. New stains and sealers are applied by hand. We continue by using many coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners applied in the same manner as when the radio was originally finished in the factory. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A fine grit wet sanding follows every third coat along with a polishing process and ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into the radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster& shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office.

I sell quality antique radios and describe them accurately, as can be confirmed with my outstanding feedback. I have sold many sets to my valued customers, museums, high profile businesses, and as TV/Movie props. All have been extremely pleased, so bid with confidence.

My radios are expertly packed using oversized boxes, many layers of bubble wrap, and several inches of packing peanuts surrounding each side of the radio so you can be assured they arrive safely. USPS economy is my default shipping method to save on shipping charges. USPS Priority or UPS can be requested at a higher rate.

Policies / Warranty: We offer a 14 day money back guarantee (buyer pays return shipping with professional packing) if the radio has been grossly misrepresented. Our radios are accurately described and in working order when shipped out. In rare instances however, as with any vintage electronics, minor problems can occur during shipment due to the age and delicacy of antique radio parts. If your radio arrives and does not work please let us know. We will gladly walk you through the process of troubleshooting to get it started. If that fails to correct the problem we will pay for return shipping to us, diagnose and fix the problem, and return the radio to you. We also offer a 30 day warranty on all the tubes, capacitors, resistors, and filters. Due to the design of some antique radio parts we cannot warranty transformers, coils, tuners, and speakers. However, if at any time these parts would happen to fail, we will assist in repairing or replacing the defective part at minimal cost. Finally, in very rare instances, if there is shipping damage a USPS insurance claim request must be made to me from the buyer immediately upon receipt of the radio. A USPS inspection of the radio, boxes, and all packing materials is required. The refund will be issued upon USPS approval and payment of the insurance claim.

If you have any questions please email me and I will answer in a timely manner.

International Bidders: This auction is open to international bidders however I ask that you email me prior to bidding for a shipping cost quote. International bidders please be aware that USPS will not fully insure shipments to some countries. If that is the case with your country, you assume the risk of any damage or undelivered package. Also, please be aware of your country’s customs policies, handling times, charges, and duty taxes. These regulations are out of my control and the responsibility of the buyer.

Antique tube radio reception can differ greatly depending on location, length of antenna, and amount of interference in different areas. Playing capability is accurately described based on my location, surroundings, and hooked up to a 12’ copper line antenna. The antenna will be included with the sale but I cannot guarantee reception quality in your area. It may differ (better or worse) depending on your location, surroundings, and interference. Antique Radio Electronics, whether restored or un-restored, are by nature hazardous due to their voltage, design and age. Any operation, repairs or other adjustments are done at your own risk.
