Coming from a family of Belgian potters, he first established himself as a pipe maker and ceramist  has  Wazemmes (1862), suburb of Lille (Northern France) ... in the 'Little Belgium' district, rue Juliers nr.20. In 1864, he moved his business to Fives-Lille, rue Malakoff n°2 and 57. Business is prosperous and Gustaaf soon builds a factory at the corner of rue du Maréchal Mortier n°15 and rue Sainte Aldegonde in Fives Lille. In 1870, he moved with his family to 22 rue de l'Espérance, this street adjacent to his factory. He was the third in a family of four children, father Denis De Bruyn and mother Marie Anne Tielens. All these children followed in the footsteps of their father, grandfather Martin and great-grandfather Jean Bernard as potter and earthenware maker. Gustave married Marie Weber and together they had twelve children. Four of these children later became employees in his factory. In 1885, Gustave De Bruyn filed an inventor's patent on a new type of varnish without lead oxide... it was a big step forward for the health of his employees, the production of decorative earthenware and stones increased. At the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, the company received a silver medal, and refined earthenware decorative and consumer objects were apparently very popular. The well-known factory mark was a ship's anchor...with an embedded D and B that was applied to the underside of each item along with the model number. Louis Majorelle, Hector Guimard and René Lalique even designed several models for this company. In 1917, the factory was partially destroyed by fire.
