EARLY CANADIAN SILVER SPOON- G. SAVAGE & SON, MONTREAL c1830

English Pseudo marks-Montreal Silversmith George Savage-1829-43

Offered in this sale is a Rare Early Canadian Fiddle Pattern Spoon , marked by “G. SAVAGE & SON ” in the early-mid nineteenth century. The spoon is in the classic English “Fiddle Pattern ” shape with down turned, tipped terminal and a rather pointed single drop heel.

According to John E. Langdon’s seminal book, “CANADIAN SILVERSMITHS 1700-1900”, the maker’s mark is attributable to George Savage & Son , active in Montreal and Toronto from 1829-43 (see photo).

SIZE & CONDITION:   The Spoon measures approximately 13.8 cm (5 1/2”) long and weighs 15.9 g (.56 oz) . It is in good condition, with minor tip wear and a dent to the terminal, but no tears or repairs and patina commensurate with age (see photos).  It features a flowing period engraved monogram.

MARKS: The spoon is clearly hallmarked on the reverse with Colonial interpretation of English Hallmarks (Pseudo marks) as follows:

“G. SAVAGE & SON ” in a rectangular punch

“LION PASSANT ” in an oval punch for Sterling Silver

“GEORGIAN BUST ” in an oval punch (to simulate the English Duty Mark)
