"We photograph and depict sterling items in their natural state,

as they would appear in your home".

We are thinning our extensive personal collection of unusual and often rare

sterling silver tastevins. We have collected only the finest during the past 40 years.

From our personal collection and for the aficionado of fine wine; we are pleased to offer

for sale an impressive... large, heavy and rare... French sterling silver tastevin and

personal drinking cup.

Larger tastevins, with greater cup depth, served a dual purpose. In addition to being traditional  tastevins,

they served as the wine maker's (merchant's) personal drinking cup when travelling. The tastevin at auction

holds up to 4 ounces of wine.

18th and 19th century French wine tasters with a coin bottom other than a French coin are rare.

The tastevin at auction features an authentic Spanish coin bottom in the denomination of 8 Reales.

These coins were commonly referred to as "pieces of eight". They were legal tender in Europe,

the United States, Canada and many other locations until the late 1850's.

The coin bottom, dated 1819, depicts the King of Spain...Ferdinand VII...the traitor king who once

sided with the French during the Napoleonic wars.

The tastevin also features the classic snake handle usually associated with wine tasters from the

Burgundy region of France.

This pre Minerva tastevin bears the unusual "Head of Socrates" assay mark (1819-1839) denoting

its .800 sterling silver composition. It also bears the maker's mark who is currently unknown to us.

The tastevin also bears 2 signatures (names). One signature is in the background and illegible.

The other in the foreground is the name P. Chastas. We can only surmise that the original owner

passed  his or her tastevin to P. Chastas.

The diameter of the tastevin's cup is approximately 3.1/2" or 9 centimeters. The depth of the cup

is approximately 1. 5/16" or 3.4 centimeters. The weight is an impressive 122 grams of heavy gauge

French silver. The tastevin is solid, in very good condition with some rubs and dings that do not detract

from its appearance and its value.

This large, heavy and rare tastevin and personal drinking cup will grace the finest collection.

It makes a great conversation piece. It displays nicely and it will surely impress connoisseurs,

family and guests.

"Please view our eBay feedback details and buy with confidence".

We do not clean silver prior to auction or shipment.

The choice to clean, or not, remains with the buyer.

Shipping, with insurance, to the Continental United States and within Canada is FREE.

Please inquire about the shipping cost elsewhere, before bidding.

We now ship to Japan and to China.

The buyer is responsible for any additional costs due to import duties, taxes and the like.

We combine shipments when possible.
